An alternative to lighter bike?
Do you want to ride your bike faster? Keep up with the pack in club ride? Or simply improve your speed on your local climbs?
The reality is that you don’t have to be a pro to achieve improvement. Or, spend a fortune on lighter component to make marginal gain. Instead, you can start to look at your weight and begin sliming down to increase your speed. Not only you will be faster, but you will impact your general health!
Ok, but how much faster?
We put some number to explain the gain based on an average 82kg rider, producing a power output of 200W.
Let’s evaluate what a 2kg weight loss would do on a 9km climb at 3%. Your average speed would be 18.5k/h if you sustain 200W power. At the top of the climb you could save 30 seconds! Now, this does seem a lot, but on a 10% gradient and 3.5km climb, your speed would be short of 8km/h. At the top of the climb, the improvement will reach 40 seconds! Imagine on a climb like Alpes d’Huez it could result in nearly 9min faster!
The significant improvement in speed will start when you lose 4.5kg or over 5% body mass! then on the last climb you would save 1 min 20….
Clearly less weight will improve your speed…. and in addition, increase energy level, better sleep and many more other health benefits.
Don’t be fooled, there is a danger in jumping on the 1st diet advertised and not achieving the right result. Reality, all diets don’t work, you will initially experience weight loss, and after a while the weight will comeback and add some more.
The right approach would consist in identifying what you eat and when you eat it. To find what is the right path, The Blue Avocado will coach you to identify what works for you.
